Empowering through employment: Supporting people with disabilities

What is the circular economy (& why should we care)?

At the heart of the Resource Collective is a powerful mission, not only to reduce landfill waste but to build a more inclusive, empowered community.

One of the most meaningful ways we do this is by creating opportunities for people with disabilities to learn, grow, and contribute through supported volunteering and skills-based training.

More than a recycling centre

When people visit the Centre, they often notice the warm, welcoming environment, and that’s no accident. Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of individuals, including our Chrome Crew, are actively involved in sorting, fixing, dismantling, and preparing items for resale or recycling. Many of these team members are people with disabilities, and their work is essential to our operations. But this isn’t just about tasks, it’s about transformation.

Building skills, building confidence

Through hands-on experiences and one-on-one guidance, we help participants develop real-world skills that can lead to long-term employment.

These include:

  • Sorting and categorising donations.
  • Safely using tools for dismantling or repair.
  • Customer service in our retail store.
  • Environmental education and waste reduction practices.
  • Teamwork, communication, and workplace routines.

This structured, supported environment allows people to build confidence at their own pace, discover their strengths, and grow their independence.

Volunteering with purpose

Our supported volunteering programme is about more than filling shifts; it’s about purpose and belonging. We believe everyone deserves a chance to contribute meaningfully to their community, and our volunteers tell us that being part of the Centre makes them feel seen, capable, and proud. For some, it’s a stepping stone toward paid employment. For others, it’s a long-term place of contribution and connection. In both cases, it’s valuable and valued.

Creating a model for inclusion

We’re proud to show that a circular economy model can do more than protect the planet; it can empower people. By placing equity and inclusion at the centre of our work, we’re proving that resource recovery can be a vehicle for social change.

Donating to or shopping at the Resource Collective is not just reducing waste. You’re investing in people, helping to build a future where work is inclusive, dignified, and full of possibility.
