What is resource recovery (& why it’s more than just recycling)?

The big picture

At first glance, resource recovery might sound like a fancy term for recycling, but it means so much more at the Resource Collective in Katikati.

We’re not just here to take in your old toasters and tiles. We’re part of a growing movement rethinking how communities handle waste, create opportunities, and care for people and the planet. Here’s a deeper look into resource recovery and why it matters.

More than recycling

Recycling is just one piece of the puzzle. Resource recovery looks at the full life cycle of materials, asking: Can this be reused, repaired, repurposed, or rehomed before it’s tossed?

It’s about intercepting usable materials before they reach the landfill and putting them back to work, either in someone else’s home, a community project, or even a whole new form.

At our centre, that includes:

  • Whiteware and electronics testing and resale.
  • Rehoming furniture, tools, and building supplies.
  • Partnering with local organisations to share surplus items.
  • Disassembling e-waste to extract valuable components.
  • Composting and greenwaste processing (via our neighbours at the council recycling centre).

People at the heart of the work

Resource recovery isn’t just about things, it’s about people. Our centre is a place of purpose and inclusion, providing meaningful vocational training and employment for people with disabilities.

Participants are involved in everything from sorting and dismantling to customer service and gardening.

Your donations help build confidence, skills, and real job pathways, not just fill shelves.

Educating for a better future

We’re also here to change the way people think about waste.

That means:

  • Showing locals how to pack donations properly.
  • Running workshops on reuse and repair.
  • Giving businesses better options for end-of-life materials.
  • Helping schools learn about sustainability hands-on.

When we treat waste as a resource, we shift from a throwaway mindset to one of responsibility and creativity.

Transformation in action

At the Resource Collective, transformation happens every day.

  • An old desk becomes a workspace in someone’s new flat.
  • A trainee gains the confidence to greet a customer.
  • A broken stereo gets stripped for parts, diverting toxic e-waste from landfill.
  • A community sees what’s possible when people, purpose, and planet unite.

This is resource recovery. It’s environmental, social, and deeply human.

Want to be part of It?

You can help by:

  • Donating items in good condition (check our guides first!).
  • Volunteering your time or skills.
  • Supporting our shop and sharing our kaupapa.
  • Choosing to reuse, repair, and rethink before tossing things out.

Together, we can build a local circular economy that’s cleaner, kinder, and more connected.
